Strategy

Final outcome: An clear IT strategy, easy to communicate to Executive teams and Board, based on an external and internal assessment. The IT strategy includes a pragmatic short term plan and financials, and longer term goals.

Stakeholder profile: The organisation's CIO or COO, the IT executive team, a BSB specialist as strategy lead, a team of in-house IT people and selected subject matter experts.

Overview: The large IT operation of a international organisation wrestles with the challenges of an ageing workforce and outsourcing pressures. The BSB specialist leads the strategic review with a team of selected IT professionals and external subject matter experts.

Following a set of structured workshops with key business stakeholders, a review of the industry and an internal assessment, the IT vision is shaped with the CIO and IT leadership team. The strategy is then broken down in three chapters (IT development, IT Operations and IT governance). The IT development chapter includes skills analysis and benchmarking. The IT Operations chapter includes financial scenarios based on various degrees of outsourcing. The third chapter includes a transformation programme.

The  final strategy, endorsed by the CEO and Board, is then communicated through various channels and projects initiated to transform the department.
